It was close to 8 pm on a Thursday and despite the fact that we were assured a rainless afternoon, it had not given up on raining! Ryan and I were relaxing talking over the weekend's sports rankings, waiting around for the seventh fuel drain that day to arrive. Finally we got the phone call from a woman on a company excursion who had arrived at the Esso filling station in New Street and put the wrong fuel in her diesel sky blue Cadillac Brougham lease car. The poor lady was very irritated by the sounds of it, stating "I still can't believe that I have wrecked the car! I'm so familiar with filling my petrol vehicle I had did not remember I was driving a diesel!" I asked her to relax and not to worry, also that such things regrettably can happen. She was able to maneuver the vehicle into a secure spot and, as it was no more than a short distance away from the office, we could get to the lady fairly quickly. The incorrect fuel was extracted and she could return to the motel she was staying at. Despite the fact that we got pretty wet, it was all worth the effort to see her drive away satisfied and a lot less worried. Yet another fuel drain in Staffordshire well done in my opinion!

The 3 things you HAVE TO know about petrol in diesel!

AdBlue In Diesel

All around Staffordshire we are discovering increasingly more cases of AdBlue contamination when a driver has poured AdBlue into their diesel tank. This is in part stemming from drivers not understanding the right way to use it (take note: it's not a fuel additive), and partly because the filler necks for diesel and AdBlue are typically directly close to one another on the automobile.

Well, what's the trouble with putting AdBlue in a diesel tank?

Because the product is primarily ionised water, it's nearly as good as pouring water into your tank. Diesel and water do not blend at all and trying to run a diesel car on water will not work. In addition, the urea is seriously corrosive to fuel system hoses and seals and is susceptible to crystalising, obstructing injectors and fuel filters. If you put AdBlue into your fuel tank drain it as soon as possible. And most certainly do not crank the vehicle - not even to maneuver it from the pump. If perhaps you have started the vehicle you would in all likelihood have to have the entire fuel system purged and fuel filters changed out.

Should you get in this position do not panic! Call us, the UK’s Number one fuel contamination service. Our engineers have got the practical know-how and working experience to have you back on the road promptly and efficiently, without mess or hassle.

Wrong Fuel in Car in ST13 Postcode - New Street Misfueling

What a quality night of sleep! It was 7:00 am on a gloomy Saturday and we were off to help an elder lovely lady after she had put petrol in her diesel grass green Lexus LX in New Street. I'd been advised she had driven away from the petrol station forecourt and pulled up in a backwater road en route to pay a visit to her godchildren. I got the location punched in the TomTom and was with her inside 60 minutes. I arrived at the location and extracted the contaminated fuel out of the car. As I was doing the drain she told me, "I'm becoming somewhat absent-minded in my old age and forgot about the car taking diesel since I'd just purchased it a couple of days back because my old one, which I used for in excess of 25 years, inevitably broke down". I got the drain done and she offered me a toffee and thanked me for my efforts. Such a delightful Staffordshire lady!

Wrong Fuel Assist New Street - Wrong Fuel in Car New Street

I had a great evening hiking on my afternoon off and felt contented the following day as I set out to assist a new family who were away in New Street. They'd stopped after inserting the wrong fuel in their light green Volkswagen Touareg 2, and the car was about half an hour's drive away. I got there at their location and smiled as I heard to the woman berating her hubby for being so daft. "Exactly how could you actually be able to fill the car up with the wrong fuel?" she demanded of him. I attempted to clarify that this goes on frequently in Staffordshire and that it's nothing at all to fret about, and yet he still got an earful by his better half. Unfortunate guy. Anyway, I extracted all of the contaminated fuel, gave the motor a flush and gave them some right fuel. Watching them drive off I mouthed so long and wondered what her indoors would say to me if ever I did the very same thing... I would under no circumstances hear the end of it!

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VAT receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
